Larry is a fixture several nights a week at Field #11 because of it's close proximity to the bike trail and it's tucked away location that's far from the street (less chance of Park Police busting heads for imbibing).

Local Boy Makes Good
Cam has been pop-fizzed. Does "Twin Citian" make any sense? Personally, I am from Minneapolis. A Twin Citian must live in Minneapolis and St. Paul.
So what's with the gnarly black nylon laptop bag?
That's just what Twin Citian Cameron Henderson and his team at Project Sustain thought too.
They decided the plastic-loving video game and handheld technology world could benefit from accessories that combined eco-conscious materials without sacrificing style.
Now you can take your Nintendo Wii or your DSi with you in a sleek hemp, organic cotton and flax travel bag. They can also carry other handheld devices and come with styluses, made from bamboo, not plastic.
The line of products is now available in Best Buy stores nationwide, as well as online.
So you can carry your games with as much aplomb as you carry yourself.
Project Sustain Wii, DS Lite and DSi cases, $12.99 to $39.99, available at Best Buy stores and www.bestbuy.com.

Sad and Happy
Plagued by mental errors and a lack of assistance from Sick Coach, Bulldog dropped their second game of the year 14-11. After stranding a bases loaded opportunity to end the game things picked up with some post-game fellowship. After being shut out of three food stops (Pineda Tacos - closed, Manny's Tortas - out of business, Little Caesars - closed), Sick Coach and Toddo found wondrous goodness on the appetizer menu at Town Talk Diner. We devoured the lightly breaded cheese curds (bacon fat included for added flavor), duck burgers (who knew mallard's are so good), fresh fried potato chips with bourbon ketchup (I could drink this stuff), and finally pork candy (sweet, tender skewered pig). The meal more than made up for the softball loss.

Bulldog Softball- May 20 2009
May 20, 2009
Dear Diary,
Tonight was Bulldog softball! WE WON!!! I can't remember the exact score, but I think it was 18-10…maybe 12-8…but don't quote me on that. We played the Habitat for Humanity team. They were really good sports…some of them were really cute (not as cute as the Gong Hitter's pitcher though…heart him!!!) It was SOOOO hot, Diary, 88 degrees! Anyway, we (Karl, Michael, and Me) got there early to "scout" the other teams. Truth be told, Diary, I was looking for boys…Karl and Michael were checking out the competition (although I think Michael has eyes for some of those Capella girls.) Anyway, the game started sooooo late, 9:40PM!!! It was crazy! Get this…apparently some dude from another team said "Bulldogs got nothing!" to which Coach Karl replied…"We have a keyboardist (Tyler), an A.V. team (Dave) AND a singer for the National Anthem (Tyler's Dad's Best Friend)." WE GOT IT ALL!!! HA!!!!
Anyway, everyone played really well. Janna was a highlight…she's SOOOO good at 3rd base (and I don't mean what you think I mean, Diary…Ha Ha!) Levi was also a really good pitcher! Todd can throw the ball so F@$%ing FAR!!! My favorite part of the night was when Cameron said to me "is it bad that Janna is better at softball than me?" to which I replied "I'm sure you are better at a lot of things than Janna…like having a penis." OH…and…the last call of the night was controversial…apparently, Erik might have stepped off the bag but Gordy called the runner out anyway (bulldog win!)…You know Gordy calls 'em likes he sees 'em!
I 've got to get some sleep, Diary. It was a late night! 'til next time!
Love,
Jackie

Longfellow EPA
Here's my English Pale Ale, hand crafted using a combination of raw grain and extract home brewing techniques. This was my last bottle out the five gallons I made this winter. Initially it was suspected of giving me a four day fever but later this proved to be unfounded. Thanks to then-pregnant Alewife for living smell of the boiled malt extract and hops on brewing day. I love that smell, the aroma of accomplishment. Once you get past that first day, the effort require to home brew is non-smelly and totally manageable (this was pre-Sig).
Here's my beer geek review:
Appearance
Burnt orange color (Hook 'Em Horns!). The head develops fine off white bubbles that quickly dissipate.
Nose
Citrus smell from the Cascade hops (similar to Sierra Nevada Pale Ale). Smells good!
Mouth
Smoother and less spicy than Sierra Nevada. Hoppy and crisp, slightly sweet, light malt, thirst quenching. Slight yeast, more so as the bottles aged and at the bottom of the glass.
Body
Thin. This is a session brew. Two 22 oz bottles causes a warm tingling sensation in extremities and temperal region (5.4% ABV).
Improvements
Enhance head retention and creaminess. Rough up the round edges for a greater hop bite and finish without going overboard.
Next brew: Hopefully I can birth an IPA of West Coast Pale Ale in June. Next winter I'd like to make a Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale clone and my first lager.
Funny: Miller Lite commercial touting it's superior taste because it's hopped 3x.

2009 schedule released. Capella week 1. - Updated
OK, enough enticement. They are in fact real. Remember, they beat us the first game last year.
The 2009 opener puts The Bulldog on the road versus the young upstarts from Capella University. I think we like playing Capella because they seem like they are one of the few (excluding Gonghitters) that have as much fun as us. We play 8 PM at Bryn Mawr Field #11 (same 'ol, same 'ol).

Puff Daddy
I found this recipe last night in my surprisingly reliable BH&G cookbook I received as a wedding gift two years. For some reason I haven't been able to master the craft of pancake making. That's why the Oven Puffed Pancake seemed so appealing - let the oven do the work, taking my judgement out of the equation. I didn't realize it until it came out, but I just made a Duth Pancake. Now when I'm in
Next time I'll let it brown a bit more, but I was under pressure from a very pregnant woman to produce food ASAP.

Spatchcock in Your Mouth
This is my new favorite way to enjoy chicken. It was excellent but the cabernet and not seeing my own breath while grilling likely enhanced the entire experience.
This came from a Steve Raichlen book called BBQ USA. It involved spatchcocking, hickory smoke, and mopping (basting). Good times.

Heart Attack Man
Ever heard of Poutine? It's a Canadian thing.
Gravy Cheese Oven Fries with Roasted Garlic
Be sure to cut your fries nice and fat, or they may break during turning. To prevent sticking, toss them carefully in the olive oil, leaving no fry uncovered.
- serves 2 -
Ingredients
3 large russet potatoes (about 1 3/4 pounds), peeled or scrubbed, cut lengthwise into 1/2-inch-wide planks, each plank cut lengthwise into 1/2-inch-wide strips
2 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon olive oil
2 bulbs (heads) garlic, intact
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
16 ounces low-sodium beef, chicken, or vegetable stock
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
4 ounces Gruyère cheese, grated (Cheddar will work too)
Procedure
1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Place potato batons in a rimmed baking sheet. Drizzle with 2 tablespoons olive oil and toss to coat thoroughly.
2. Remove papery, outermost skin from garlic, but keep the bulb intact. Slice off top 1/2 inch of bulb, exposing each clove; discard trimmings. Drizzle each bulb with 1/2 teaspoon olive oil and rub with fingers to ensure top is evenly coated. Wrap and seal each bulb in aluminum foil.
3. Roast potatoes and garlic parcels on top rack of oven. After 20 minutes, turn potatoes with spatula. Roast until potatoes are tender and golden around the edges and garlic cloves are soft when pressed, about 20 minutes more. Sprinkle fries and garlic with kosher salt.
4. While potatoes and garlic are roasting, prepare gravy. In a saucepan, over medium heat, combine flour and butter. Stir until incorporated and cook, stirring frequently, until mixture is the color of peanut butter, about 3 minutes. Add the stock in small increments, whisking to incorporate after each addition. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until mixture has thickened, 15 to 20 minutes. Season well with salt and pepper. Remove from heat and keep warm.
5. Pile fries on a rimmed plate and top with grated Gruyère cheese and hot gravy (reheat if necessary). Place one bulb of roasted garlic on each plate. To eat, squeeze the cloves from their skins and smear onto fries.

2009 Bulldog Softball Registration
Use the link above to pay online using credit/debit card or PayPal account. No joke, it's secured through PayPal.
We are 59 days away from this year's opener on April 29. I remembered to register on time this year so we're back at it on Wednesday nights, field 11 Bryn Mawr Park. Since Coach's unborn baby needs to eat, everyone is going to pay before the season starts. Meg is due April 24 so I expect her to be starting at second for the first game. I might even let Baby Coach make the batting order.
Registration was $420 and softballs will cost around $50. Depending on how many we have on the team this year, everyone maybe benefit for a one-time surplus refund taking the form of PBR silos.

2009 Powerhorn Art Sled Rally
Nerd sled rally. I loved this so much. I even took the video for this. Have you ever seen an art car parade? This is sort of like that but adapted for Minnesota winter. Oppenheimer
Being a father in waiting has made me more contemplative about my childhood. It can be triggered by seeing a family in a restaurant or even a PBS documentay.
I sometimes feel like I missed out on being a scientist. There seems to be a more clear sense of success and failure, right and wrong than other professions, including my own. I thought
American Experience on PBS recently aired a documentary entitled The Trials of J. Robert Oppenheimer. This man gave his all to his country as creator of the atomic bomb but was later destroyed by accusations of Communist Party membership. Actor David Strathaim (Good Night and Good Luck and The Bourne Ultimatum) plays the morose scientific visionary.
I was facinated by this program because it involves the creation of a product so powerful that it could destroy the entire world. I find it hard to believe only 9 counties are currently known to have nuclear weapons in 2009, 64 years after the first. I supposed its not comparable to kids building smoke bombs based off a recipe they found on the internet. Particle accelerators and enriched uranium is quite difficult to obtain, just ask Doc Brown.

The Day The Music Died
Is it irony that this video came out on the anniversary of the date when Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper's plane went down?
This can't be real. This can't be real. Microsoft is developing software that will turn your voice into Muzak. I could see Christian home schooled kids thinking this was neat. That's about it. Maybe I'm wrong and this will pull Microsoft out of it's prolonged slump. Afterall I was wrong about W 2x.

Pail to Pale
This afternoon I bottled four and a half gallons (I left behind half a gallon with the yeast and spent hops) of English Pale Ale. Cleaning and sanitizing goes faster when using 22 ouncers but it's still a pain in the ass. The first bottle should be lightly carbonated and drinkable in two week. I'm not sure if Pale Ale's are supposed to be copper colored, but I'll drink what I've got.
Here's Northern Brewer's description of the kit I brewed:
Easy to brew, tastes great in a bottle or a keg... it's no surprise that English pale ales are consistently popular with homebrewers. English pale ales are generally maltier, sweeter, and less aggressively hopped than the American version. Our kit produces a slightly caramelly, copper-brown, medium-bodied ale with a flowery, fruity boquet and subtle bitterness from real English hops. We selected Wyeast Whitbread Ale for this kit because of its high flocculation, which makes it possible to package the beer and drink it very fresh — try serving it on tap at a low level of carbonation. Rule Britannia!

Hi, come in. Please take off your shoes.
Inspired by my Uncle G-Man's blog, 1410 Oakwood, I have decided to document life's comings and goings in this new blog. The name take the ringer comes from a line in one of my favorite movies, The Big Lebowski. This movie along with Office Space helped me to feel comfortable and confident that putting off getting a job after undergrad was really in my best interest.
I am going to try consolidating my Bulldog Softball Blog into Take The Ringer. Going times and prosperity are coming. I promise.
